Dog Aggression Training

Bark Busters Home Dog Training’s Guide to Aggressive Dog Behavior

Aggression is not a personality trait—it’s a behavior that dogs develop when they feel threatened, confused about their role in the home, or unsure of how to react to certain situations. If your dog lashes out at other animals, strangers, or even family members—we deeply understand the heartbreak and stress this can cause for everyone—and you are not alone.

There is a path forward. Learning to understand what causes your dog’s aggression is the first step to creating a safe, calm, respectful, and happier home environment.

Why Do Dogs Become Aggressive?

An example of Bark Busters Home Dog Training for aggressive dogs.

Dogs usually show aggression because they feel unsafe or uncertain. When fear mixes with adrenaline and unclear boundaries, it can lead to behaviors that seem dangerous—but often erupt from a place of emotional overload.

Dogs may act aggressively for many reasons, including:

  • Maternal aggression: guarding their puppies
  • Resource guarding: protecting toys, food or treats
  • Territorial aggression: defending their home or territory
  • Protective aggression: protecting their owners
  • Pain aggression: reacting to discomfort or injury
  • Conditioned behavior: learned responses from inconsistent or poor training

What are Signs of Aggression in Dogs?

  • Lip Licking

  • Tucked Tail

  • Raised Hackles

  • Rigid Posture

  • Yawning

  • Lifting Lip Without Growling

  • Staring Intently

  • Lowering Head

Reactivity vs. Aggression

Aggressive behavior is often confused with reactivity, but there is a difference. Reactive dogs tend to overreact emotionally to everyday situations—like seeing another dog on a walk. While this may appear aggressive, it usually stems from poor socialization or a lack of impulse control.

Many dogs labeled as "aggressive" are actually reactive. Bark Busters trainers recognize the difference and specialize in dog aggression training that targets the emotional root, not just outward behavior.

What Causes Reactivity?

Reactivity commonly stems from:

  • Inadequate socialization as a puppy
  • Past traumatic experiences
  • Lack of impulse control
  • Unpredictable environments
  • Improper handling by humans

With the right training—especially a personalized, in-home dog training program—we can help you understand if your dog is demonstrating reactive behavior or true aggression.

What Can You Do If Your Dog Displays Aggression?

What Doesn't Work and Why

Ignoring the Behavior

When dog owners ignore aggression, dogs may see that as your approval. Or at least, not a correction. Left unchecked, aggressive behaviors almost always escalate over time.

Avoidance or Over Management

While keeping your dog away from triggers might seem like a good short-term fix, it doesn’t resolve the cause of the problem. Accidents happen, and managing behavior isn’t the same as modifying it.

What Does Work

Personalized Training for Aggressive Dogs

Bark Busters trainers are highly specialized in dog training for aggressive dogs, uncovering the underlying causes of this behavior.

We create realistic, step-by-step programs designed to correct the root causes of aggression using our natural communication-based techniques. No punishment. No gadgets. And steady, over-time fixes.

We tailor our work with clients to your dog’s environment and behavior patterns. That’s what makes our aggressive behavior dog training approach so effective—and why so many families trust us with their dogs.

How to Manage Aggressive Dog Behavior

If your dog is showing signs of aggression, follow these steps to begin building a safer, more peaceful home environment:

Work with an Expert Bark Busters Trainer

A professional dog trainer with experience in aggressive dog training is equipped to identify the underlying cause of your dog’s behavior and can create a customized plan for you. Handling an aggressive dog without professional help can lead to misunderstandings about the root cause of the behavior. An untrained, aggressive dog poses potential safety risks, compromises the dog's well-being, and may lead to consequences of ineffective training.

You deserve a joyful, happy home with your companion, and our trainers are here to help.

Use Proper Equipment

Choose a secure, well-fitted harness or collar and a sturdy leash for controlled walks. In some cases, you may need a properly fitted muzzle or crate for safety.

Avoid Triggers

Reduce your dog’s exposure to triggering situations while you work on behavior modification. This gives your dog the space and time to learn new responses without constant stress or accidentally overwhelming them.

Avoid Harsh Tools and Punishment

Never use prong collars, choke chains, or e-collars. These devices are often responsible for increasing fear and aggression. Bark Busters’ training philosophy—and years of success—support kind, consistent leadership instead.

Reinforce Good Behavior Early and Often

Stay calm and lead with clarity. Use praise and positive reinforcement to reward the desired behavior. Your dog wants to please you; they frequently just don’t know how.

You’re Never Alone: There Is a Way Forward

Training for aggressive dogs requires empathy, patience, and guidance. Whether you’re here because you are dealing with a young puppy showing early signs of trouble or frustrated with a long-standing behavioral issue that has left you exhausted and worried, there is hope.

Many pet owners searching for local help reach out to us to help manage aggressive behavior. We have helped thousands of individuals with our in-home, personalized sessions designed to restore peace, safety, and joy to their lives with their dogs.

Bonnie has been so helpful with training my stubborn Rottie. The techniques she has taught me have improved me and my dogs life. Bonnie is clear with communication and is quick to come by when we need a follow up. We tried other trainings before Bonnie with no results. I get instant results with the things she has taught me.
Peter was amazing and so helpful! He worked with us for 5 hours the first visit and gave us some many tools to start building our cofidence and training with Marvel. I feel so much better about getting our pup back to the fun, loving guy we know he can be.
Peter was super patient, explained everything so well, and gave us a ton of tools for each problem area we gave him. We already see small changed in Marvel and it gives us a ton of hope. We are excited to continue working with Peter and are super hopeful in our new training and routine. If you need help with you pup, give Peter a call!!!
Josh was very helpful in guiding me to make the appropriate corrections with my dog's behavior. Xena made tremendous improvement during the visit and I'm sure will continue to do so with the tools and lessons learned in my session.
My 4 year old Pomeranian had a lot of behavioral issues that I was struggling so hard to correct. He was always territorial of his food, places in the house and me and would even resort to biting to guard these things. He would also bark nonstop in the house when he heard dogs outside and no command could stop him. He would also be very reactive to other dogs in public which would always stress me out when we were out to the point where I wasn’t able to enjoy being out with him. This always made me so sad to have to leave him in the house all the time because of his reactivity. I was desperate for change and was so scared that he wouldn’t be able to change since he is already almost 4 and has very severe habits. However, Justin has completely changed him. I was skeptical when they said we would see results within the first session but it was absolutely true. After just one session, he became the quietest dog on our block. He wouldn’t respond at all to the dogs barking around our neighborhood. He became so well behaved, some family members became worried because of how quiet he stayed. The biggest miracle is him not being territorial anymore. This has ensured my family of complete safety around the house. I never thought my dog would be able to learn how to heel, but Justin showed him how in the first session which completely astonished me. A few days after our first session, I was able to take my dog out to the mall and it was the first time I was able to enjoy being out with him. He would quietly wait under the table while we ate and didn’t react to dogs he would come across while we were walking. Justin has been absolutely amazing. It is so comforting to have someone of his caliber and expertise guiding you and genuinely caring about you and your dog. He makes every effort to make sure he is able to help with whatever you need and always emphasizes that he is only one text away. He always finds a way to fit you into his schedule and is a complete joy to be around. When they say he is the last trainer you’ll ever need, they mean it. Investing in training my dog has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Both me and my dog have become less stressed and are both now able to enjoy life to the fullest.
James is thoughtful, wise, careful and confident. He quickly and easily effectively diagnosed our issue with our dog and gave us great coaching on correcting unwanted behavior. His approach is rooted in a clear and nuanced understanding of dog psychology, and human psychology, and it shows. Highly recommended.
I was very skeptical when he said that my dog would start listening and obeying right away just on the first visit with him. To my surprise he wasn't kidding. This is a training program that is well worth it. He's got the tools and techniques that are crucial to your dogs learning progress. I've had a few visits in the past few months and my dog has made so much progress. Although I have to say you have to be patient, consistent and committed to putting in the work with your dog. It will not happen overnight. I thought an appointment every 2-3 weeks was too long. But that gives you the time to work with your dog on the assignment given, so he or she is ready for the next step. I would definitely recommend Bark Busters Home Dog Training as your new dog trainer. The best part about it is if you come across something that needs to be corrected with your dog down the road, they are always going to be there for you.
Orlando was very informative and knowledgeable about dogs. I learned techniques I have never seen before. I was very impreased with the techniques utilized. Orlando was through & spent ample time training each dog.
The session was super infomative and orlando anwered every question we had. He was easy to talk to and extremely knowledgeable.
Orlando was amazing! He explained that psychology (dogs) behind why the trianing works. After explaning and showing us trianing we were able to train our dogs to do what we wanted.
Absolute magic.
Here's the biggest takeaway from our experience: while our dogs benefit from training, it's really us who need to learn how to better understand them.
After just the first visit, we saw a dramatic change in our 5-year-old Maltipoo, Louie. He had always been highly reactive--pulling on the leash with surprising strength for a 14-pound dog, barking at every dog we passed, reacting to every outside noise, and going into a frenzy whenever someone came to the front door.
Having guests over was stressful and uncomfortable because he would bark nonstop at anyone unfamiliar. It honestly caused me a lot of anxiety.
Then in March, we brought home Norman, our 5-month-old puppy, and I quickly realized I didn't want him picking up Louie's bad habits. The thought of managing two reactive dogs--and double the stress--was overwhelming.
I found Bark Busters through a stranger | struck up a conversation with about my new puppy. She had dealt with similar challenges and shared how much it helped--not just her dog, but her own anxiety as well.
I reached out to James right away, and his response time was incredibly fast. We've now had three sessions with him. The first is a thorough three-hour session, packed with eye-opening and incredibly useful information. Follow-up sessions are about an hour.
What stands out most is how much this process focuses on retraining us. It's about changing our instincts and reactions, and learning how to communicate more effectively with our dogs.
James is patient, supportive, and excellent at explaining not just what to do, but why it matters.
This isn't a quick fix. It takes time, consistency, and commitment.
If you don't practice daily, progress can stall--l've seen that firsthand when we've gotten a bit inconsistent. But when you stay committed, the results are absolutely worth it.
We're already seeing such positive changes. Walking Louie is now enjoyable--something I never thought I'd say. Neighbors who used to see his reactivity can't believe how calm he is now.
We can actually stop and chat during walks.
If you're willing to put in the work and want a calmer, happier dog--and a more peaceful home--l highly recommend James.
He's kind, knowledgeable, and truly supportive throughout the process. Stick with it, and you won't regret it.
James has worked wonders with my 6 year old lab mix, Artie. Overall, she is a very good girl but has hao reactivity problems on walks. After being attacked several times by off leash dogs, she would constantly lunge and throw herself at other dogs, uncontrollably scratching and snarling at other dogs behind fences and others we'd pass the street.
After just a few sessions with James and rigorous adherence to the home program, it was like walking a different dog. Our walks are a lot calmer and she can relax and enjoy the adventure.
James is absolutely amazing!! We reached out to Bark Busters because our rescue German Shepherd/Husky mix had experienced a difficult reactive regression after having surgery on both of her hind legs. My husband and I had also recently had our own surgeries - so Jazzee had grown fearful and anxious.
Lots of jumping and somewhat aggressive, hyper behavior - especially in the presence of other dogs. I had grown anxious just walking her.
From the VERY beginning, James was extremely kind, calm and knowledgeable. After just a few minutes of observation, he recommended a leash change and some behavior modifications - all while encouraging us to reward her with lots of love when she was successful! I love how he clearly cared for her.
Within just a few weeks we have a totally different dog!! She is far more calm, can sit quietly as other dogs walk by - and is even fairly calm now when there are many dogs around. We are soo grateful and look forward to working more with James in the future. He is wonderful!! We would recommend him to anyone!
Scot was funny and engaging and immediately put us all at ease. He was clear and the effect on the dog was immediate! It will clearly take a lot of consistent behavioral change by the humans in our family to work long term, but Scot made it crystal clear what those changes are by showing his example, instructing and giving feedback on our attempts. We’re very hopeful for the future after just one visit from him!
Absolutely worth it for the happiness of you and your dog! My puppy is a perfect angle baby inside but she would pull so bad on the leash during every single walk that I was ready to scream in frustration. After Mark showed us this great front-clip harness she is now a perfect angel baby outside as well! I'm not exaggerating - her behavior on-leash is completely different and walks are now calm and so much more enjoyable. I was also able to use the techniques Mark taught me to get her to stop biting and tugging on the leash!
Recently have gotten training for my dog Dolly. Heather is an excellent trainer and Dolly picked up everything super fast! She no longer pulls while walking and has calmed down a lot around home too. I recommend, worth every penny.
I had a great experience with Heather at Bark Busters Home Dog Training. She was knowledgeable, patient, and very easy to work with. Heather quickly understood our dog’s behavior and gave us simple techniques that started working right away. You can tell she truly cares about the dogs and their owners. Highly recommend!
I have only had one session with Heather, but am feeling really good about the program so far. She gave me several great tools for calming my dog down and managing her behaviors. I'm looking forward to doing more sessions and having a calmer and more obedient dog.
Jared was great! He helped us navigate a very difficult situation. He was responsive, knowledgeable, effective, kind, and flexible. Years ago, I had extensive training as a service dog trainer. Though my skills are a little rusty! Needless to say, I have a very high bar when it comes to what I expect from Dog Trainers. Jared was excellent with the dogs and with us the humans. The situation involved an aggressive dog that was being fostered after the fires in LA. The dog was not getting along with the other dog in the house; was running out of the yard; was charging at humans. So he helped us making the dogs, children, and neighbors be safe during this tense time. Thanks Jared!
Bonnie is incredible! I only wish I had reached out to her sooner. I was hesitant to work with another trainer because I had tried several in the past and found their methods difficult to implement. One of my dogs had been struggling with aggression, and we were becoming increasingly concerned about how to manage the behavior safely and effectively.

After just one session with Bonnie, I was absolutely blown away by the results. She quickly identified the root causes of our challenges and gave us clear, practical guidance that was easy to implement. The change in both dogs was immediate and remarkable.

One of the most impressive improvements is on our walks. After a single session, both dogs are walking calmly on a loose leash instead of pulling and straying. It feels like I have completely different dogs.

Bonnie's approach is knowledgeable, effective, and empowering. She not only helped my dogs but also gave me the confidence and skills I needed to be a better leader for them. I look forward to our continued sessions and building on these spectacular results. I cannot recommend her highly enough!
Last year, we adopted a dog to add to our home, along with another dog and a cat. The addition of the second dog made my daily walks almost impossible. Together, they were extremely reactive on leash to other dogs and our neighborhood foxes. I was facing a situation where I had to walk them as early as possible in the morning to avoid dogs, but the foxes were often out. I thought I might have to walk them separately, which was not appealing! Mark came to us about a year ago, and the meeting made a huge impression on my dogs. We went through the techniques we could use to reduce the reactivity and put me in charge of the walks. Now, a year later, I no longer fear the walks and the loss of control that made it dangerous for all of us. We are not perfect by any means, but that's because of me and not the techniques! Like all dog training, it's as much about the owner as it is the dog. I recommend them highly.
Sharon was amazing! Super nice and great with our dog :) We definitely noticed a difference after one session. I would definitely recommend!

We adopted our good boy Buddie from a shelter in December. A sweet boy, but years in a shelter (five!) has made him somewhat a sensitive pup prone to barking to loud noises and strangers approaching. Passing cars on walks yielded barking and lunging, doorbells ringing, more barking. We tried some “do-it-yourself” online things with zero success, and realized actual one-on-one training was the only option. Enter Tommy from Bark-Busters. His initial three-hour in-home training course was amazingly effective, so much so the change in Buddie was almost night and day to us. Upon meeting Buddie for the first time, Tommy immediately knew the kind of sensitive dog Buddie was and tailored his training to suit. His techniques were easy to understand and master and can be practiced anytime we’re with Buddie. No more barking when the doorbell rings, or when a car passes, or a stranger approaches. Buddie’s a lot calmer now which is more in keeping with his overall sweet nature. Highest recommendation!
When we adopted our two dogs, they couldn’t have been more different and wild from each other. Bark Busters and Tommy Meyerhoeffer not only helped us tame them, which in turn provided all of us a beautiful home to share, but he gave us tools to understand their language and communicate ours. He helped us bring peace to what was initially chaotic, and couldn’t have done it with more compassion, clarity, and effort. I highly recommend Tommy and his services.
Luis was amazing. We called him back 8 years after he initially trained Roxy as a puppy and he fully honored the lifetime guarantee. He sat with our family for a good 2 hours, if not longer I feel. He was very detailed, and patient. He was AMAZING with Roxy and the new puppy and literally had results within minutes. Thank you so much Luis!
Greg from BarkBusters truly changed our lives, and we will forever be grateful for his help. When we brought our newborn home, our cocker spaniel Hudson became extremely anxious and would not stop barking at the baby. We were overwhelmed, exhausted, and honestly at our wits’ end. We didn’t know how to help Hudson or how to make the situation safe and peaceful for everyone involved. At one point, we even had to have Hudson stay with family because our dog and baby simply could not coexist in the same home. Greg stepped in with patience, understanding, and an incredible depth of knowledge. More importantly, he gave us the tools and confidence we needed to help Hudson succeed. He never made us feel judged or hopeless. He helped us understand our dog better and showed us that the situation was fixable with consistency and the right guidance. Today, Hudson is a completely different dog. Our baby and Hudson can now lie side by side calmly and safely — something that once felt impossible to us. Having our whole family together again means more than we can put into words. I would recommend Greg and BarkBusters to anyone who needs help with their dog. The investment was worth every penny for the peace, confidence, and harmony it brought back into our home.
GREG is a very talented dog trainer. As advertised, it’s a one-time, well-worth-it fee. My nine-year-old Golden was completely resistant to getting in the car and to walking down the front stairs of our home. With one visit lasting about 30 minutes, GREG helped Bodhie feel comfortable with both activities. No choke collars, no shock collars, and no tricks. Greg is a dog whisperer. More importantly, he taught me his effective technique. Practice and exercise took a few days, but then Bodhie was happy getting in and out of the car and walking down the stairs without hesitation. I would not use any other trainer.
I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt the need to share my experience in hopes it will help someone else on deciding the best training. James does an excellent job of meeting you where you are. What I love most, he tailors the training according to your needs rather than expecting you to adjust to their expectations. I believe Bella and I have formed a deeper bond because of James knowledge and support. I can confidently say that Bella is on the right path to becoming a well behaved companion. Thank you Bark Busters!!!
At our first meeting, we were provided with such valuable information to put into immediate action. Learning dog language (while challenging due to years of old habits) made a big difference in getting our dogs attention to participate in training. In just 2 days our dogs already look to us for instruction and I know with continued practice it will even improve! Jeri gave clear and detailed verbal and written instructions. Thank you Jeri!
