New Puppy? Need to Start Potty Training?
There's no way around it, potty training is essential for new puppy owners. Your puppy has not yet developed the awareness or physical capability to control bodily functions like an adult dog. Establishing a toilet training routine with puppies requires time, effort, and consistency to yield results, but don't worry Bark Busters Boston North is here to help.
Tips for Potty Training Your Pup
In addition to regular trips outside, there are six key moments to take your pup outside to potty: when they wake up, before they go to bed, when they’ve been eating or drinking, if they’re frightened or anxious, if they’re excited from play, and right after someone gets home.
I always say my number one rule with a puppy is if you don’t have eyes on them, they need to be contained. Whether that is in a playpen or a crate. You need to be able to correct the behavior in the moment so that you can redirect them to where you want them to go and then praise them afterwards.
Dogs learn by association so it will take them some time to figure out where you want them to go. The same is for teaching commands, it takes repetition for the dog to associate the command with an action!
I always use natural cleaning products and my go to for potty clean up is 50/50 water and vinegar to get the smell out. If it smells like a toilet, it must be a toilet! No need to buy expensive cleaning products.
Puppy Training Can Start Today
Training can begin just a few days after your puppy adjusts to their new home. Starting early and staying consistent helps establish the leadership skills necessary to manage your puppy’s behavior effectively. Contact me today for a customized plan!

Should You Crate Train Your Puppy?
Yes, your puppy is instinctively a den animal. Just like a natural den in the wild, a crate provides a safe and comforting space where your pup can feel secure. When given the opportunity, puppies naturally gravitate toward a den because it brings them comfort. A crate should always be a calm, safe retreat - never a form of punishment.
A crate provides you with the opportunity to relax or get things done without constantly monitoring your puppy. It also aids in training by limiting mistakes to when you're available and ready to correct them. Since dogs instinctively avoid soiling their dens, a crate is an excellent tool for potty training as well.
Tips for Crate Training Your Puppy
- Pick a crate that is only large enough for the puppy to stand up and turn around - any larger and he may soil a corner where he does not sleep.
- Start to feed meals in the crate to create a positive association.
- Give high value longer lasting treats and chews in the crate to give your dog an activity.
- Randomly drop bite size treats in the crate without your dog knowing so they become curious and start to sniff them out!
- Supervise your puppy for safety.

Is Your Pup Showing Signs of Separation Anxiety?
If your dog howls, whines, barks or is destructive when you leave them, they may be suffering from separation anxiety. Separation anxiety in dogs occur when they become distressed and anxious when left alone or separated from their owners. Symptoms can materialize differently in different dogs and in different situations, but may include:
- Excessive vocalization (howling, barking)
- Inappropriate toileting
- Destructive behavior (chewing, digging)
- Excessive panting
- Pacing and drooling
Tips for Managing Your Dog's Anxiety
- Start creating distance inside, where your dog can see you but can’t reach you. For example, you can place your dog in a crate or behind a gate.
- Next, practice separating from your dog in a way that they can’t see you but still know you’re nearby. For example, you could be in your bedroom with the dog outside the door. Once your dog is comfortable with this, gradually increase the time before practicing leaving the house.
- Do not coddle your dog when they are barking, howling or whining. They could mistake this as praise and can make the behavior worse.
- Cameras can be a helpful tool to monitor your dog while away.
- Dog calming music can be helpful too!
