In-Home Dog Training in Santa Clara County!

Your dog can have good manners! With our personalized one-on-one dog training, we help you understand the way dogs communicate. We believe in empowering dog owners with simple, effective, time-efficient, and cruelty-free techniques that will work alongside dogs’ natural instincts. No harmful methods. No unnecessary treats.

Welcome. I am Josh Rombro your Bark Busters Dog Trainer and Dog Behavioral Therapist in Santa Clara County. I have been a dog lover since childhood. I grew up with two dogs of my own, Smeagol and Wookiee. They were both Bichon Frise, a breed notorious for needing lots of care and maintenance, but those little furballs were my best friends. Whether I was coming home to my own dogs, or visiting some friends with their own furry buddies, I was always the first on the floor to introduce myself by letting him know I was there to play. Now, it's me and my rescue - a white Labrador named Bruce, who is a perfect gentleman.

In his past life, Bruce was a stud for a breeder. He was mostly left outdoors and experienced little-to-no socialization, attention, exercise, training, or care. He was largely a business asset, and not much more. He didn’t know his name and he wasn’t used to the love and security of having anyone stable upon which to rely. After being rescued early in the pandemic and stuck inside with me for more than a year, he developed a very strong case of separation anxiety, and a lingering weight issue.

After months and months of trying to "wing it" with internet research, I had made no substantive progress with my own dog training. I knew I needed professional guidance. I wanted someone who stood by their service and I really needed results. I called Bark Busters and was especially impressed by their Life of Dog Support Guarantee.

My Bark Busters trainers taught me how to "Speak Dog" - to communicate more effectively and put my dog on a path to a long and healthy life. If it hadn’t made so much sense, I would have called it magic. But it wasn’t magic - it was highly intuitive and incredibly effective. Bruce is a happier, calmer, and more independent-than-ever dog. He has also lost nearly 25 pounds, has more energy, and fewer allergies. Bark Busters was truly a life changing experience for our family.

At my core, I am a life-long educator. Ever since I was a student myself, I have been engaged in roles where I was sharing what I knew with others. I have been a private tutor, a wrestling coach, a test-preparation instructor, a special-needs teacher/mentor, and a high school math teacher.

Once I learn something, I feel a need to share it with others who can benefit from the knowledge. This truth is exactly what led to me join Bark Busters and take the rigorous classroom and hands-on training program and become a Bark Busters master dog trainer and dog behavioral therapist myself. After experiencing first-hand what Bark Busters did for me and my dog, Bruce, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to share that blessing with others. I made the leap, and I’ve been taught and mentored by some of the very best in the world.

Using the Bark Busters method, l can teach you the difference between dog obedience and good behavior, and help identify the root of the problems you are experiencing with your dog's behavior so that you can live a happier life together with your dog. If you've recently added a puppy to your family, start puppy training with me now and build a strong bond with a foundation of leadership, trust, and respect in your home between you and your new canine companion.

...not only was my very active, huge newfy under control, but I also learned the communication skills I needed to get him to listen to me. I am so appreciative for our lesson. On our first walk, for once, I was able to control him confidently without being pulled over! We were able to get him out of the prong collar and under control in one session. We learned how to use permission dynamics at doors and crates to get him to respect me. This was so important to me, as my two dogs are both 150 pounds of love, and I am in my 80s. Having them under control enables me to keep my dogs and I safe. Thank you so much for your help!
Josh is a gifted trainer (and we have worked with a few!)! From the moment he walked into my home he started teaching us about communicating with our dog in a way that we had never been told to in our 9 years of having her (she has always been a high-maintenance dog). Within the first 10 minutes of our lesson we put his teaching into practice and saw results! He is articulate and explains things in a way that makes it simple, easy to remember and fun. He is realistic about goals and how to achieve them, always keeping the family unit in mind. He has a positive and enthusiastic attitude, I can’t wait to see how our dog and family blossom now that we have Josh “in our pack” to help us rebuild trust and structure.
Josh, we are truly grateful for ALL you have already done for our family. Thank you for following your vocation/passion for animals and gift of teaching so that you can help those of us who need it.
……
May 2024: Update…we’ve been working with Josh for several weeks now and have seen drastic improvements with our dog. She’s more responsive to us on leash, guarding the front window less, and overall has more energy since we changed her diet. She’s been kicked out of doggie daycare in the past and shown to have more reactivity with dogs as she’s gotten older. This week Josh met us at a dog park and after doing on leash training outside of the park Josh says to me “let’s go in and walk the path inside”…not once did my dog lunge or even growl at the other dogs! At the end of the day I was so proud of her/us for this monumental accomplishment!
Josh, I can’t thank you enough for coming into our lives and helping our family!
My pup Pongo has been struggling with his reactivity on leash and manners in the home. After our first session it is like I have a different dog. I can't thank Josh enough and Barkbusters! I really recommend this for anyone struggling with their dog!
Josh has been an incredible trainer and made a huge difference with our rescue dog. He has been patient, responsive with our questions, and easy to work with. It is clear he has a lot of knowledge and experience when it comes to working with dogs, especially with behavior and nutrition. We have noticed a huge amount of progress in a short amount of time, and the recommendations he has given us have made our dog much happier. We had Josh return for a second session and he made time for us on a Friday night. We still have work to do but we feel much more confident and are looking forward to the continued results.
Josh is a wonderful trainer to work with. My family has a Red Fox Labrador and German Shepard-Labrador mix, both of whom are in need of training. With just one lesson we are already seeing changes in their behavior and we have ideas for further improvements. We look forward to continual consultations and visits and have confidence that his guidance will give our dogs the growth we need from them.
When we got our puppy we knew that we wanted to get a trainer for him. My sister found Bark Busters and we scheduled our first appointment with Josh. Over the past 3 months we have learned so much from Josh and we couldn't be happier. Josh is amazing at what he does. He is so personable, professional, and funny. Anytime we have a question he responds promptly. If you are looking for an amazing dog trainer go with Josh at Bark Busters.
Josh was an amazing trainer and brings so much knowledge to the table. We have a new puppy named Bruin with unlimited amounts of energy and curiosity. In one session Josh was able to teach both us and the dog more than could ever be expected. Our puppy is now well behaved and asks for permission instead of running around like a wild beast.
In addition, it was brilliant to be able to talk to Josh about dog nutrition as he is a certified dog nutritionist. Dog food on the market can be a maze of choices, and Josh was helpful in providing the needed information to make a smart and informed decision. Between training and food, our new expertise will insure we have many happy years with our pup!
Josh at BarkBusters has done an amazing job helping me with my Pit Bull Storm . He is very patient and I have seen great results with he has taught and shown me to do so that my dog is more trustworthy and responds to me now . He also has given me good advice on nutrition for my dog . At first I was skeptical but now I am a true believer in Josh and Bark Busters !

I strongly recommend this business (Josh). We rescued a traumatized hound and Josh was able to help us improve our dogs anxiety before he left from our appointment. He covers everything from nutrition to behavior modification (which is really training the human how to relate to a dog in a way that makes them feel safe. Thanks, Josh
I had read the reviews about Josh and they all convinced me right away. But I was even more convinced after my first home visit! He is very knowledgeable and knows how to read and understand dogs behavior excellent. Everything he says makes sense. He is very patient with answering all my questions. He's very polite. I totally recommend him and his trainings. The program is lifetime and it's a very good investment if you want to break any bad habits your pup may have. I needed my pups to get along and not eat each other up. They have come a long way. They now take naps together in the same bed and share the water bowl! And they can now play with toys together without becoming possessive over them!! Thank you Josh!!
Josh has been great helping to train our Dachshund. Our main areas of focus have been separation anxiety and reactivity, and we've made great strides in just two sessions.

We've had other trainers before, and have found that they often take a one-size-fits-all approach to their training -- they try to apply their framework to every dog without exception. I appreciate that Josh instead meets our dog where he is and adapts his approach accordingly. He's not blindly applying a framework to every dog he interacts with. You can tell he loves dogs and takes his job very seriously!

Josh has given us thorough, actionable advice to improve our dog's behavior in our focus areas, and I have no doubt we'll solve our dog's issues with Josh's help! He's super responsive to our questions, in person and via text, and scheduling follow-up sessions is a breeze. Highly recommend Josh to anyone looking for a trainer!
Josh has been an amazing coach for me. My sheepadoodle is full of energy, jumps on visitors, tries to chase squirrels when walking, and loves to counter surf and eat anything. The strategies Josh has shared and his hands on demonstrations keep me focused and have made a huge difference as I work with my dog. I think training my dog in her natural environment is also key to her success. I highly recommend this in-house program.
We came upon Bark busters while searching for a trainer that could help us with our rescue dog Kody. After a few weeks he began to display aggression towards people and other animals. He barked at everything moving ferociously while in the car. We were not able to take him anywhere. I could go into more detail about Kody's issues but suffice it to say they were serious. We knew we needed help but we were worried we may not be able to find a trainer that could handle such difficult problems with a very large dog. People recommended board and train facilities but we didn't like that idea because someone else is training your dog. We knew we needed to learn how to train our dog but we were clearly in over our heads. Several things were appealing about Bark busters. The price is reasonable and our trainer Josh has stuck by the promise to be Kody's trainer for as long as Kody needs. He initially spent almost 4 hours with us. We also really like his method of correction and praise without treats, choke, shock or pinch collars. A few months ago if you had told me we could get this dog under control without all of the above I would not believe it. The change in our dog has been amazing. All along the way Josh has been there to guide us with clear and concise direction. Josh is a very talented, dedicated trainer and teacher. A big part of the training has been his teachings on how to communicate effectively with our dog. He is also quite knowledgable about nutrition for your dog. We highly recommend Josh Rombro and Bark Busters. Today we were able to take our dog in the car to meet Josh at Starbucks and sit on the patio without any barking, snarling or lunging.
We thank you Josh!
One week in and so far we're pretty impressed with Josh and the Bark Buster program! Josh is a great educational speaker and took the time to make his training guidance as engaging as possible throughout the kick off session. Our shelter pup is the sweetest little guy, but still has a ways to go before he's fully okay with being by himself, and in one week he's already made big strides with being crated for increasingly longer stretches of time. I liked how the training was not punishment based but instead about building the pup's confidence in their humans and setting them up for a happy and healthy life.
Josh was amazing with advice for our 2 dogs with various issues. Many have now resolved and we are still working on some. Having him in our home was so much better so he could see them in their natural habitat.
Josh is an absolute wizard with dogs. We adopted a chihuahua that was giving us a headache with territorial behavior, growling, barking, and not listening to our commands. After working with Josh, we can recall our dog, walk him calmly and confidently next to other dogs, and he knows his boundaries inside the house. Our dog is so much more well behaved than we ever thought was possible at the beginning of the process.

Josh's methods are all non violent, never relying on physical coercion. He instead teaches you how to communicate with your dog so that he understands what is right and what is wrong. Josh knows when to slowly introduce new methods to see constant progression. Josh doesn't promise overnight results, and indeed some of his communication methods do take some time to stick, but once they stick they are long lasting, permanent solutions.

Josh has a one time upfront payment fee. Even though he doesn't have any incentive to keep contact since he doesn't make more money per visit, he has always been proactive in setting up follow up consultations without us needing to push him. He identifies problem areas and sets up periodic visits even many months after our initial visit.

All in all, we had high expectations when we signed up with Josh but somehow he has still managed to exceed them.
What can I say? Josh is amazing!!!

I have used 2 other trainers that just didn't work for us. I was never comfortable with the other trainers so I kept searching and came across Bark Busters. My dog Charlie and I are so glad we did.

I made my appointment with Josh and anxiously awaited our meeting. Right away he was personable, funny and boy does he know his stuff. I've never met someone who understands dogs like he does. Everything he said made sense! Like wow it's common sense we just didn't know what we don't know.

Josh takes the time to explain how we need to communicate with our dog and why we need to communicate this way. The 1st meeting is a long one. But so worth it. He also discussed the importance of nutrition.

I'm so excited for the future with my best furry pal. I've already started telling all the neighborhood dog parents about Josh. I can't wait for everyone to see Charlie's manners on display. If you need help with your pooch please call Bark Busters and get an appointment with Josh. You and your dog will be so glad you did.

Our dogs want to be good dogs they depend on us to help them be the best they can be. My dog has separation anxiety, he barks, jumps scavenges food. Josh explained the reason for all of these behaviors. So fascinating to learn about what makes dogs tick. Definitely recommend their service.
We recently started working with Josh for both our dogs: a 10-year-old dog, Paisley, and a 12-year-old dog, Bailey.

Bailey struggled with aggression issues, which have worsened over time. With two young toddlers at home, this was terrifying. Paisley has had problems with anxiousness and separation anxiety. She also started having accidents inside the house, which was becoming a real issue for us.

Josh helped us meet both dogs' core needs, such as the right type of food, leadership, and interactions. He was patient and understanding, taking the time to answer all of our questions and teach us techniques to use at home. His background as a former teacher was incredibly helpful. He made concepts stick in our minds by relating them to simple, memorable classroom examples.

We were really impressed with Josh's approach to working with Bailey's aggression. He didn't use any harsh methods. He immediately helped us correct Bailey's behavior, where he kept barking and jumping up to steal our toddlers' food. Thanks to Josh's guidance, Bailey's behavior has improved significantly...instantly...almost magically.

We HIGHLY recommend Josh as a dog trainer. He is knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely cares about the well-being of the dogs he works with. We are grateful for the progress we've made with both Bailey and Paisley, and we look forward to continuing our work with Josh in the future.
Josh is an incredible teacher and our two dogs responded to him immediately. Very happy we chose Josh to work with us, my husband and I learned a number of techniques that we have applied with immediate results. Looking forward to working with Josh and highly recommend him to anyone interested in the right way to train and enjoy your dogs. A real pro and a great trainer!
Josh did a fantastic job in just one session with our Bernedoodle Winston. He's a sweet dog that just was too riled up with guests and things outdoors, and Josh helped us understand how to better communicate with Winston. The results were basically instantaneous and he's been so much better already. We are thrilled we decided to do Bark Busters and are so pleased with his progress.
Josh was absolutely wonderful. Explain training in detail. Brought training supplies and listened to our needs. We have two shepherd puppies, one was rescued and the other came from a breeder, which means they both have different needs. I highly recommend this program and Josh
Josh and the Bark Busters system helped us keep our dog! We came to him after an incident of our dog being reactive to an extended family member. Now she's more confident, obedient, and happier, and our lives have improved. Thank you, Josh, for helping us and (maybe literally) saving our dog's life!
I was skeptical about this appt, but after Josh's visit, I feel comfortable that I did the right choice for my dog. Josh is very calm and confident which is good bc my dog has scared her past trainers and he was cautious but firm with my dog.
Josh is excellent!! Our 2 dogs had issues with barking and when one session their barking is under control. Josh is knowledgeable and is a great teacher
Josh is great, really learned a lot from him that helped our dog and mostly gave us key tactics that we could apply immediately. Highly recommend!
Josh did such a great job teaching us some leadership skills for our Raleigh Roo. She used to rush the front door to greet visitors and now she waits to come greet people until she has settled down. We practice every day and we have a well mannered puppy now! We're so thankful for Josh and the Bark Busters method. I highly recommend this service!

Does My New Puppy Need Training?

Puppies need guidance to learn good manners and develop a pleasant nature – after all, they are very similar to infants and toddlers. They require more time and attention for housetraining, socialization, feeding, and entertainment than adult dogs – not a commitment to be taken lightly.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when training your new puppy, but Bark Busters Santa Clara can help build a basic foundation of trust and respect in a safe and nurturing environment, including crate training, potty training, and leash training your puppy.

Bark Busters Santa Clara gives you everything you need to successfully train your puppy at home, including how best to deal with the many common problems that occur in the first six months like:

  • Chewing
  • Playful Biting
  • Barking
  • Food Stealing
  • Digging
  • Potty Training
  • Separation Anxiety

Training can start a few days after your puppy has settled into their new home. Early, consistent training means establishing leadership traits that are key to managing your dog’s behavior. Ready to get started?

Are You Dealing with a Reactive Dog?

Dogs who respond to normal, common, and every-day occurrences with abnormal and/or excessive levels of aggression are often termed reactive. A common example of reactivity is when a dog sees another person or dog across the street while going on a walk. Normally this scenario should illicit no reaction, a passing glance, or maybe slight excitement from a dog - but for a reactive dog, the response is much more and this can often be deemed "aggressive."

What causes Reactivity?

Dogs who are impulsive, or better said, a dog that has not learned impulse control is often deemed reactive. Dogs who are reactive usually:

  • Lack emotional self control
  • Lack proper or positive socialization while a puppy
  • Had a previous bad encounter or experience that left them traumatized and triggered

Our trainers at Bark Busters Santa Clara specialize in aggressive dog training and know how to look for reactive tendencies and know how to help treat the underlying issues causing your dog's behavior. If you are struggling with a reactive dog, we can help. Call us today at 1-877-500-2275.

Is Your Dog Displaying Symptoms of Separation Anxiety?

Dogs often form strong attachments to their families, expecting constant companionship. However, when left alone more frequently, confusion can set in, leading to Separation Anxiety—a complex behavioral issue with adverse effects. Timely intervention, though, can alleviate distress for both dogs and their owners.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Assessing a dog's behavior in its home environment is important to pinpointing the cause of their behavior. Separation Anxiety may present itself in various ways, such as:

  • Excessive vocalization (howling, barking)
  • Inappropriate toileting
  • Destructive behavior (chewing, digging)
  • Excessive panting
  • Pacing and drooling
  • Attempting to escape from their crate or your yard

Anxiety Can Be Relieved with Training

If your dog displays anxiety upon your departure, professional intervention is crucial. Call us at 877-500-2275. At Bark Busters Santa Clara, we specialize in addressing separation anxiety, particularly as owners transition back to offices after remote work. This issue not only impacts dogs but also places a burden on owners. With over 35 years of collective experience, our team excels in resolving this concern.
